Language learning app Duolingo has removed content relating to “non-traditional sexual relations” in Russia after being warned by the country’s communication regulator about publishing LGBT material classified as “extremism.” Russia has tightened restrictions on the promotion of LGBT propaganda, accompanied by a broader crackdown on LGBT rights. The regulator, Roskomnadzor, had written to Duolingo and cautioned against publishing such content. In response, a Duolingo spokesperson expressed support for LGBTQ+ rights but acknowledged the company’s compliance with local laws. Russia has designated the “LGBT movement” as extremist and has imposed fines for violations of its propaganda law.
